On Monday, March 30, 49th State Brewing is bringing Seward’s Day to all three Anchorage pub locations with a celebration of one of our most iconic beers: Seward’s Folly Russian Imperial Stout.
This one-day event is all about honoring the bold character, rich history, and legendary name behind Seward’s Folly while giving guests a rare chance to get their hands on two limited bottle-only barrel-aged variants and an exclusive piece of glassware.
When the pubs open on March 30, guests will be able to purchase two special bottle releases:
- Coconut Rum Barrel-Aged Seward’s Folly
- Whiskey Barrel-Aged Seward’s Folly, our annual release
The Coconut Rum Barrel-Aged variant already made waves this year, earning third place at the 2026 Alaska Craft Beer and Barleywine Festival competition in the Winter Warmer category.
And that is not all.
At all three Anchorage pub locations, guests who purchase a glass of Seward’s Folly will receive a free exclusive Seward’s Folly glass, designed to resemble the beer’s distinctive can. It is a special keepsake for fans of this award-winning stout and a fitting way to celebrate the day. Please note: no other discounts can be applied to this promotion and it’s available while supplies last.

Why the Name “Seward’s Folly”?
The name Seward’s Folly reaches back to one of the most important turning points in Alaska history. n 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia in a deal negotiated by Secretary of State William H. Seward. At the time, many critics mocked the purchase, calling it “Seward’s Folly” and “Seward’s Icebox,” believing the territory was little more than a remote, frozen wasteland with little practical value.
History, of course, proved otherwise.
Alaska would go on to reveal immense natural resources, extraordinary strategic importance, and unmatched cultural and geographic significance. What some once dismissed as a foolish purchase became one of the most consequential land deals in American history.
That spirit of underestimated greatness is exactly what inspired the name of this beer. Seward’s Folly Russian Imperial Stout is a nod to Alaska’s past — a reminder that bold decisions, like bold beers, can leave a lasting legacy.
The Story Behind the Russian Imperial Stout
Just as the name Seward’s Folly carries historical weight, so does the beer style itself.
Russian Imperial Stout is a style with roots in 18th-century England. Brewers created strong, dark stouts that could endure long journeys by sea, and these richer, higher-alcohol versions became especially popular in the court of Catherine the Great of Russia. Over time, the style became known as Russian Imperial Stout — a beer celebrated for its intensity, depth, and age-worthy character.
Traditionally, Russian Imperial Stouts are known for bold notes of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, caramelized sugar, dried fruit, and warming alcohol. They are layered, powerful beers built for contemplation and often suited for cellaring or barrel aging. That heritage makes the style a perfect match for Seward’s Folly.
Like the story of Alaska itself, a Russian Imperial Stout is expansive, complex, and full of character. It is a style that rewards patience and curiosity — qualities that also define Alaska’s history. In Seward’s Folly, those themes come together: a beer named for one of Alaska’s most famous historical nicknames, brewed in a style with imperial roots tied to Russia, the very nation that once owned Alaska.
It is a connection that feels especially fitting. Alaska’s story and the Russian Imperial Stout style are linked by history, endurance, and a sense of boldness that stands the test of time.
