Cheers to our new brewmaster joel shields
joel shields joins 49th state brewing as new brewmaster
49th State Brewing Co. is excited to welcome Joel Shields as Brewmaster, bringing nearly two decades of experience and a deep understanding of craft brewing at scale to one of Alaska’s most recognized beer brands. Joel joins the team after 17 years at Rogue Ales, where he played a key role in brewing operations during a period of growth and expansion. His background combines technical expertise, consistency, and a commitment to innovation, making him an ideal fit as 49th State Brewing continues to build on its momentum.
Joel’s arrival marks an important step forward for the brewery as it invests in both its production capabilities and long-term vision. In his new role, he will oversee all brewing operations, including recipe development, quality control, and production, helping guide the evolution of the beer portfolio while maintaining the character and approachability that define 49th State Brewing.
His hire reflects a unique throughline in the company’s leadership. Joel becomes the second former Rogue Ales team member at 49th State Brewing, joining Marketing Director Andrew Cockburn, who previously spent four years with the Oregon-based brewery. That shared background brings a common perspective on how to grow a brewery thoughtfully, balancing creativity, operational discipline, and a clear sense of brand identity.
Joel also brings a long-standing personal connection to the company. He has been friends with 49th State Brewing founder David McCarthy since their time in brewing school, where they met through the Siebel Institute’s exchange program with the renowned Doemens Academy in Munich. Both have built their careers in parallel since then, and the opportunity to finally work together is something they have discussed for years. Now, that shared history comes full circle as they join forces at 49th State Brewing.
For Joel, the opportunity at 49th State Brewing was driven by both the strength of the existing brand and the potential ahead. The brewery has built a reputation rooted in Alaska, one that resonates with locals and visitors alike, while continuing to expand in alaska and beyond. With increasing demand and a growing footprint, the timing is right to further elevate both the beer and the systems behind it.
As the brewery enters this next phase, the addition of Joel Shields underscores a broader commitment to investing in people, process, and product. Looking ahead, Joel will focus on refining core offerings, developing new beers, and ensuring that growth is supported by consistent quality at every level. His experience working through the complexities of scaling production without compromising standards will be key as 49th State Brewing continues to grow.
